President Tinubu yesterday warned against the stigma placed on drug abusers and how they are perceived in the society.
He addressed this yesterday while speaking at the event of the United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking yesterday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The theme for the event was "People First: Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention.
He said the stigma makes people unable to gain access to proper healthcare and rehabilitation which the drug addicts really need.
He added that the most vulnerable people in this regard, are women, young people, people in marginalized societies, displaced people as a result of natural disasters and conflicts. These people are often exposed to the stigma of drug abuse.
He expressed that these groups are faced with barriers from accessing the mainstream opportunities on ground for drug abusers.
He urged the public to get the right education and enlightenment on drug abuse in order to tackle discrimination and stigma. He also urged the youth to make informed decisions which will have a positive effect on their lives.
