The Federal Government has once again extended the NIN-SIM linkage. The deadline was initially set at the end of 2020, but with many Nigerians unable to register for the NIN, the deadline was postponed to January 19, then February 9. With many still unable to register, the deadline was moved to the 6th of April but trust Nigerians... The Federal Government have just approved a new date for the deadline, extending the exercise by another one month.

This announcement was made on Friday, April 2nd by the Minister for Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami.

Pantami said the request to extend the deadline was presented to President Muhammadu Buhari, which he agreed to, to further allow more Nigerians register. He also laid emphasis on the benefits of linking the NIN to SIM cards, as this will help security operatives do their work well. He said the monthly registration has also seen a large turnout, with an increment to about 2.6 million registrations been carried out.

The statement of extension was co-signed by the National Identification Management Commission (NIMC) and Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC).

The minister also urged Nigerians to corporate and take part in this exercise, to register and link their SIM cards, saying it is mandatory and not optional.
