FG frees 15 Katsina inmates, supports them with N10,000 each for transportation
On Saturday, December 10th, the Federal Government authorized the release of 15 inmates from the Malumfashi Satellite Custodial Centre in Katsina. Each other was given N10,000 to help ease their transportation fare to their various homes.
This news was made public by Mr Haliru Nababa, The Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service. He stated that the release was facilitated by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The inmates who were released were those with minor offenses who have repented during their stay at the prison. This action put smiles on the faces of the released inmates who had never thought they would be freed.
In the statement, Nababa said that this was the first time that inmates would be freed in the county. Doing things like that would also go a long way in reducing overcrowding in custodial centers. He opined that improvements will be recorded in the service delivery of custodial centers since inmates would tend to abide by the prison's rules.
Nababa further urged the inmates who weren't freed not to lose hope in themselves. Instead, they should see it as an opportunity to change their ways and obey the rules of the custodial centers for they might be next to regain freedom.
