FG plans to spend N22.4bn on feeding inmates


The Federal Government has revealed that they would spend N22.4bn on feeding the inmates in Correctional Centers in Nigeria. They revealed this on Thursday.

It was Dr Shuaib Belgore who is the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, who revealed this. He made mention of this information during a High conference on decongesting and corrections management which held for 2 days in Abuja

He said there has been a steady increase in the population of inmates in the country.

It has increased by at least 80% and they are still awaiting trial.

He also revealed that there are 244 custodial centres in the nation.

The population of inmates in these Correctional Centers are 75,507. The male population of these inmates is 73,821 while the females are 1,686 in number.

They revealed many of these centers are becoming overcrowded.

He also mentioned that out of the total number of inmates, a huge number of 52,436 out of the 75,507 are still awaiting trial while 23,071 inmates have already been convicted.

He revealed that this fund to feed the inmates is budgeted for in the 2023 Appropriation Act.

He mentioned that the government is concerned about issues that have to do with the decongesting the correctional facilities in Nigeria.
