FG sponsored just 422 delegates to Dubai's COP28, President Tinubu's aide confirms
After the FG received numerous backlash from furious Nigerians for sponsoring 1,411 delegates to Dubai's COP28, President Tinubu's aide addressed the general public on the total number of people that were sponsored by the FG.
Frederick Nwabufo, President Tinubu's Senior Special Assistant on issues concerning Public Engagement, revealed in a statement that the FG- FG-sponsored delegates weren't more than 422 persons. He dismissed other information that have circulated in the media by reiterating that the FG was only responsible for 422 delegates out of the 1,411 that were on the list for the COP28.
He added that those 422 delegates comprised 32 persons from the National Council on Climate Change, 34 persons from the Federal Ministry of Environment, 167 persons across all Ministries, 67 persons from the Presidency office, 9 persons from the Vice President's office, 40 persons from the National Assembly and 73 people from the Federal Parastatals/Agencies.
He further cleared the allegations that were levied against the Federal Government over the wastage of the county's scarce resources by stating that massive attendance from the Nigerian delegates wasn't unwarranted. He said Nigeria is the most populous African country, hence, our robust participation at the COP28 wasn't inappropriate. Also, the Presidency has addressed this issue twice already just to clear the criticisms that have been making rounds on social media.
Another Presidential spokesperson, Tope Ajayi, said that Nigeria is expected to have more delegates in attendance because it is Africa's largest economy.
