The Joint Admission Matriculation Board is set to introduce cognitive and verbal reasoning tests for Direct Entry students starting in 2024. This was borne out of the need to test the academic stance of the Direct Entry candidates across Nigeria.

The JAMB boss, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, stated that the new development is an intelligent test that will measure each candidate's skills which is slightly different from the usual tests taken on Mathematics, English, Physics, and other subjects.

Instead, the new test will test student's soundness in areas like verbal reasoning, data checking, abstract, mechanical, and numeric reasoning, and work sampling. Additionally, Direct Entry registrations now be restricted to JAMB offices. Each potential D.E student must provide the following information during registration:
1. Registration/Matriculation Number of the previous school attended where the qualification was obtained
2. Subjects of qualification
3. Awarding Institution;
4. Institution attended
5. Year of graduation
6. Admission letters
