Liverpool have been dealt a major injury blow in the defense ahead of their crunch Premier League tie against Manchester City at the weekend.

Top defender Ibrahim Konate hobbled off the game against Sparta Prague in Czech Republic and could likely miss the cracker against Manchester City.

The France international was replaced by Virgil van Dijk in the second half after he appeared to have picked up a knock and could not continue with the game.

There have been concerns among Liverpool fans over Konate's injury scare with some fans insisting Klopp should have sub off the player before the break.

Addressing the injury scare, Klopp made light of the situation and is optimistic Konate will be back to full fitness soon.

''Konate picked up a knock. It is not that serious I think. He will be back soon," he said.

Konate's injury has added to Liverpool's injury crisis at the back with first-choice right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold also sidelined.

Meanwhile, the club have recently received a double injury boost with Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai back in action.

The Reds steamrollered to an emphatic 5-1 victory over Sparta Prague to get off the mark in their quest to qualify for the Europa League quarterfinal.

Mac Allister opened the scoring for the away side after winning and converting a spot kick before Darwin Nunez scored his brace to make it 3-0 at the break.

A second-half double by Luis Diaz and Dominik Szoboszlai sealed a 5-1 victory at the blast of the final.

The Sparta Prague win is a warm-up for Liverpool ahead of the high-stake clash with Manchester City at the weekend. The club will be hoping to have Konate return fit for the rollercoaster matchup with the Premier League and European champions on Sunday, March 10.
