Man gets electrocuted to death while stealing electric cables

EEDC officials retrieving the corpse from the pole

A man recently got electrocuted to death while stealing some cables on an electric pole in Anambra state. This man is yet to be identified. The incident occured near the Faculty of Education building in Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State.

This cable thief had climbed the electric pole in order to steal some cables and had even almost finished cutting the cables from a high-tension pole when he got electrocuted. The electrocution came as a result of power been restored suddenly by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC)

This incident took place on Monday, 11th of September 2023. The dead body of this their was discovered 2 days after which was on Wednesday, September 13. People discovered the corpse dangling from the pole that Wednesday morning and this was while the electricity distribution company officials were seen removing the body from the pole. The electricity distribution officials, university officials and some policemen, and others were spotted at the scene removing the corpse from the pole.

An official In the university revealed that they had found the body that morning hanging from the pole. They discovered that he had almost finished cutting the cables he wanted to steal when the power came on and killed him.

In his words "We came this morning and found the body suspended from the electric pole at a transformer point in the area of the new Faculty of Education building, close to the Department of Economics. Evidence showed he was almost done cutting a high-tension cable before electricity was restored by the EEDC and he got electrocuted. EEDC officials, policemen, and officials of the Safety Department of the university were on the ground as the body was being retrieved around 11am today. I witnessed the retrieval but wish to remain anonymous.”

This isn't the first time the news of a cable thief getting electrocuted would be heard of especially in this state. The Head of Corporate Communications of the EEDC, Emeka Ezeh, had revaled that there have been cases of repeated vandalisation of electricity installation in the region.
