Deborah Oluwaseyi Joshua, popularly known as Seyi Shay is part of the 2021 season of Nigeria Idol, a music talent show. Alongside her, is Dj Sose and Obi Asika.

Seyi, who was born and raised in London, to Nigerian parents, attended Command High School, Maryland, Lagos before she went back to London to further her studies.

Seyi Shay performed on the international stage alongside Mary J. Blige at the ‘Sisters with Soul concert in September 2013. She also appeared in a movie alongside Vector, as the leading actor for ‘Lara and the Beat’.

Seyi Shay is known to be outspoken and sometimes controversial with her words. A 17 years old boy came to audition for the Nigerian idol, but seems his performance didn’t go well with Seyi Shay, saying, “YOU ARE NEVER GOING TO MAKE MONEY BEING A SINGER”.

This statement has made Nigerian Twitter space go agog, with many bringing out the video where Seyi Shay translated ‘EP’ to be Electronic Package, instead of Extended Playlist. Some even called her an upcoming artist, who is trying to reduce competition for herself.

The show is a competition that needs to sieve out the bests ones from the bests and this is part of the process, which seems harsh on Seyi’s part. The competition will be filled with ‘sauce and stew’. Many should expect more of this as stricter measures will be taken, as the show goes on.

Though Seyi Shay’s comment might sound harsh, she could have gone with the ‘Sandwich’ model, according to Dr. Olufunmilayo on Twitter,
“Seyi Shay should have tried the sandwich approach
Praise first
Criticize
Praise them again
That's how to give feedback
Eg: nice voice, I think your performance could be better if trained, once again, nice voice.
How you say a thing matters also.”

This year’s show promises to be interesting, as it is been sponsored by Bigi Drinks.
