The FA Cup is heading towards the last eight and there are some huge football clubs looking forward to winning the Cup at the end of the season.

Football clubs like Liverpool, Manchester City, Newcastle, Chelsea, and Manchester United are all taking part in the fifth round of the tournament, with Newcastle and Manchester City already in the quarterfinals of the tournament after a win over Blackburn and Luton Town, respectively.

However, the fans have been confused about the use of two different VAR systems for the fifth round of FA Cup ties.

Is VAR in use for FA Cup fifth-round ties?

The VAR will only be used at a Premier League ground for the fifth round of the FA Cup tie due to the licensing rules.

The England Football Association didn't apply to the International Football Association Board (IFAB) for full use across all the games in the country.

The competition has been using VAR since 2018, when it was used in a trial format. It was extremely expensive to install VAR in the Championship and other league football in England.

Meanwhile, the English FA have been criticized for creating an imbalance in the sporting standards of the competition. Responding to criticism in 2023, the FA said, "Video assistant referees provide match officials with additional support and should be utilized wherever possible."

"However, only Premier League stadiums are currently licensed to use VAR due to the infrastructure, workforce, and costs that are required."

Which FA Cup fifth-round ties will have VAR in use?

Due to the fact that all Premier League football clubs are allowed to make use of VAR, the match between Manchester United and Nottingham Forest will make use of it.

Wolves home game against Brighton, Liverpool against Southampton, Chelsea against Leeds United are going to make use of the VAR.

The two matches between Blackburn and Newcastle and Maidstone against Coventry didn't use the technology.

Will there be replays for the FA Cup fifth round?

The FA Cup replays have become a huge part of the most famous cup tie in England. There have been extensive changes in recent years in regards to whether the replays should be played in the fifth round of the tournament.

In the 2020–21 and 2021–22 seasons, the replays were scrapped for all rounds due to fixture congestion. In the 2022–23 season, the England FA brought back the replays for the third and fourth rounds.

In the 2023–24 season, there were also replays for the third and fourth rounds of the tournament. However, starting from the fifth round, there were no replays.

Any match that ends in a draw in full time will be settled via penalty. The match between Blackburn and Newcastle on February 27, 2024, ended 1-1, and it got settled by penalty, with Newcastle moving to the quarterfinals.
