Former Real Madrid star Robinho has been told by the Brazilian judges that he must serve a nine-year prison sentence for rape in Brazil.

In 2017, he was sentenced in Italy to a nine-year prison sentence for participating in a group sexual assault on a 22-year-old Albanian woman in an Italian club when he was playing for Serie A giant AC Milan in 2013.

Robinho claimed he is innocent of all charges and has been living in Brazil for the past seven years.

The former Real Madrid player revealed what happened in the Italian nightclub where he was accused of gang raping.

He said, "'It makes me laugh because I'm not interested; the woman was drunk; she doesn't even know what happened."

Due to the fact that Brazil doesn't extradite its nationals, Italy has decided to propose that Robinho serve his prison sentence in his home country.

A Brazilian court has now ruled that he must serve the nine-year prison sentence in Brazil. Although he could appeal in his country's Supreme Court.

On March 20, 2024, Robinho's lawyer, Jose Eduardo Alckmin, told the court that his client wanted a retrial in Brazil on the grounds of the sovereignty of the nation.

Meanwhile, a lawyer named Falcao, who supported Robinho's serving the prison sentence in Brazil, claimed that if Robinho fails to serve the prison sentence, it may cause diplomatic friction between Brazil and Italy.

He said, "There's no obstacle to validating the execution of his sentence. It was confirmed by a court in Milan, which is the competent authority in this case."

"The conviction is final. The defendant was not put on trial in his absence in Italy; he had representation."
