Tinubu implores removal of the stigma placed on drug use

The President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu has implored the removal of the stigma which has been placed on the use of drugs.

He did this yesterday and went ahead to warn against the stigmatization of victims of drug use.

He revealed that this stigmatization prevents these victims from reaching out and receiving the support that they need as well as care.

Julius Adelusi- Adeluyi who is the chairman of the MTN Foundation also spoke about issues relating to it.

Headvised that they tackle the issue of drug abuse and take it as a national emergency.

The President while speaking during the celebration of the United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking mentioned that he endorses this theme “People First: Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention.”

This was at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, yesterday.

He revealed the importance of this theme as to put the well-being and dignity of these victims first as a priority. This is so as to see their worth and how important it is to provide effective solutions, interventions and treatment.

He said that these people who live in rural areas, or displaced often face such stigmatization and discrimination.

Such people are hindered from accessing the needed healthcare and in the society and they won't be able to receive the help they need to tackle their addiction.

He revealed that people need to be note that every human has fundamental and be mindful of it.

He also said that Stigma is both social and structural and can affect people negatively and complicate matters.

He also spoke about education the people to see that there are dangers I abusing drugs as well as stigmatizating the victims he called for support of these victims.

He says people should show support to thos struggling with drug addiction so they can receive the necessary treatment.

He also added that Drug addiction is not a death sentence so they victims must be supported and encouraged.
