What is Halloween?

Halloween is a popular celebration which is held in many countries around the world, mostly western countries. Halloween is an opportunity for people to dress up as various characters including scary ones like ghosts, movie characters, favourite celebrities or fun characters etc. It is also spelt as Hallowe'en. This day is dedicated to the reference of the dead.

It is observed as an holiday. It has its origin in a pagan religious celebration which is the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. This celebration welcomes harvest when summer has ended. People would often wear customes of their choice so as to chase ghosts away.


When is halloween celebrated?

It is usually celebrated on the 31st of October 2023 which is the day before (the eve) of the feast of All Hallows. 2023 Halloween was celebrated yesterday, Tuesday, October 2023.

People now celebrate Halloween by throwing parties, carving pumpkin, trick or treating, and other celebrations. Some people see it simply as a fun period not as a religious festival.

What is Trick or treet?

Trick-or-treating is a custom observed during Halloween celebration. Its a traditional custom that is observed when children dress up in costumes of their choice and go out the night of Halloween to ask for treats (candy). They would go from house to house to request for treats and eveyrtime they get to a place, they would say "trick or treat

Do Nigerians celebrate Halloween?

Interestingly, Nigerians have also begun to adapt to this culture of celebrating Halloween. Nowadays, people thrown Halloween parties and invite friends to dress up so they can have fun. Some famous social media influencer would also celebrate by putting on makeup to show their Halloween character and share on social media.
