⚡ Massive Boost for Nigeria’s Power Supply: Geregu & Gbarain Plants to Add 675MW to the Grid!

Nigeria’s power generation capacity is set for a major uplift as the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) completes key restoration projects that will inject up to 675 megawatts (MW) into the national grid.

The announcement was made following the successful restoration of the Geregu NIPP plant and ongoing recovery efforts at the Gbarain NIPP facility.

450MW Restored at Geregu Power Plant

NDPHC has restored 450MW to the national grid after completing an extended four-week maintenance on the Geregu NIPP plant.
• The maintenance was executed by Siemens Energy.
• The goal was to boost operational reliability, enhance performance, and extend the plant’s lifespan by increasing its equivalent operating hours (EOH).

This restoration marks one of the largest power recoveries by the company in recent years. ⚙️✨

⚙️ Gbarain Plant Restoration Underway — Another 225MW Coming

Work has begun on the 225MW Gbarain NIPP plant in Bayelsa, which has been offline since 2020.

Once fully restored, the combined contribution from Geregu and Gbarain will add 675MW to Nigeria’s power supply — a major win for energy stability.

NDPHC MD/CEO Jennifer Adighije described the project as a significant step in reviving dormant national power assets and commercializing generation for industrial hubs across the Niger Delta.

Revival of Dormant Turbines Across Nigeria

The Geregu and Gbarain recoveries form part of a broader turnaround strategy.
Over the past year, NDPHC has revived six previously dormant gas turbines across multiple NIPP plants:
• Calabar NIPP – GT4
• Omotosho II – GT1
• Benin NIPP – GT1 & GT2
• Sapele NIPP – GT4
• Alaoji NIPP – GT3 & GT4

These restored turbines will collectively add 875MW to NDPHC’s mechanical generation capacity — a huge boost to national supply. ⚡

Recovery of Missing Equipment & Major Project Milestones

Despite industry challenges, NDPHC continues to hit important operational achievements, including:
• Recovery of 110 containers containing critical turbine parts and HRSG components abandoned for over nine years at Onne Port.
• Progress on Light Up Nigeria – Agbara Industrial Cluster Project, designed to connect Agbara Industrial Estate to the national grid.
• A 10MW embedded solar project for an industrial area in Kano. ☀️
• Completion of transmission/distribution projects in Borno and Delta States.
• Completion of the Afam–Ikot Ekpene 330kV double circuit transmission line, improving power evacuation routes. ⚡

Financial Wins: Debt Recovery & Insurance Claims

NDPHC has also recorded significant financial progress:
• Recovered over $10 million in long-standing debts from bilateral customers.
• Secured $15 million in insurance claims following the Alaoji plant fire incident.
• Advanced discussions with NERC concerning recovery of investments made in TCN’s transmission projects.
• Resolved long-term commercial issues with ACCUGAS, resulting in a revised gas supply agreement that lowers government exposure.

Strengthening Internal Governance & Staff Welfare

To improve accountability and performance, the company has introduced:
• A procurement benchmarking desk
• Computer-based testing for staff performance evaluation
• A management support allowance to cushion impacts of fuel subsidy removal

These reforms aim to strengthen efficiency and corporate governance across the organization. ‍

Commitment to a Reliable & Sustainable Power Future

Adighije reaffirmed NDPHC’s commitment to:
• Restoring dormant capacity
• Stabilizing power operations
• Supporting Nigeria’s long-term goal of reliable and sustainable electricity access

She emphasized the company’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and continuous engagement with stakeholders.
