The CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, claims that two billion people all over the world followed and watched the 2023 African Cup of Nations since the tournament started on January 13, 2023.
Note that 50 games were played during the tournament; football fans across the World praised the quality of football and the level of officiating at the tournament.
2023 AFCON matches were aired in around 180 countries through deals with partner broadcasters, including Sky, Canal+, BEIN Sport, BBC, and MultiChoice. Also, 6,000 journalists applied for media accreditation, which was the double of the last AFCON in Cameroon.
It is the most watched tournament compared to the biggest American sport, the Super Bowl in 2024, which was watched by 200 million people all over the world, despite the attendance of famous hip-hop musicians like Usher, Taylor Swift, and Alicia Keys in the finals.
In addition, despite the 2024 Super Bowl being the most watched United States TV broadcast since the 1969 Moon landing, it was not on the same level in terms of viewers for the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Also, AFCON beat Euros 2022 in terms of the number of viewers worldwide. The Euros 2022 were watched by 365 million nations worldwide for both the men's and women's tournaments, with the finals between Italy and England getting the most views in the tournament.
It is a major development in the African Cup of Nations, and CAF President Patrice Motsepe is looking forward to building on it when the tournament returns in 2025 in Morocco.
It was revealed that CAF will earn around $75 million in sponsorship revenue from the 2024 African Nations Cup.
The tournament was previously referred to as a “little tournament” by Liverpool's outgoing manager, Jurgen Klopp, but now it seems to have gotten the recognition it deserved for the first time in many years.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino proposed a major change in the next AFCON in Morocco.
The FIFA President, Infantino, proposed that the next African Cup of Nations should be held in either March 2025 or postponed to January 2026.
It was revealed that Morocco's initial plans to host the tournament during the months of June 2025 and July 2025 may prompt FIFA to delay the start of the European League until September 2025.
However, there has been no feedback yet from the organizers of the African Cup of Nations, with FIFA President Infantino wanting a quick decision to be made in order to amend football schedules when necessary and put into discussion a way forward with the international stakeholders of the Football Association.
