Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has reportedly received threats from South Africa football fans for his role in the elimination of the Bafana Bafana from the 2023 AFCON.

The South African fans reportedly threatened him not to return to South Africa after the tournament. Nwabali plays for South African club Chippa United and has been endorsed and supported by the club throughout the tournament. The Super Eagles sensation is expected to be back to his club after AFCON but has now been warned by ultra elements among South African football fans not to return to the country.

Former Super Eagles international Idah Peterside revealed the threats while speaking on Channels Television, stating that some fans have warned Nwabali not to go back to Chippa United in South Africa after the AFCON tournament.

While the threat has not been reported, it’s believed that some South Africans are displeased with Nwabali’s role in preventing their team from reaching the finals.

Peterside said, “The biggest problem we have had is that we have gotten some messages where people have sent messages to the goalkeeper threatening him. I hear some people are telling him not to come back to South Africa since you didn’t want us to score. We have not heard of any violence. but just threats. They have been threatening him and threatening some people.”

Nwabali showcased his goalkeeping prowess during Nigeria's semi-final showdown against the Bafana Bafana. He made crucial saves throughout the game to stop an ascendant South African side who seemed more clinical on the attack. The climax of Nwabali's standout performance was when he saved two penalties during shootouts to hand the Super Eagles a deserved 4-2 victory over the Bafana Bafana.

The Chippa United goalkeeper stopped Mokoena's spot-kick, including Makgopa's to see the Super Eagles through to their 8th AFCON final.

It was a celebration galore on the Nigeria stands at the Bouate Stadium and the Super Eagles bench but a nightmare for the Bafana Bafana who have hoped to reach their first AFCON final since 1974.
