South Africa head coach Hugo Broos is talking tough as the 2023 AFCON enters the knockout stage. The 71-year-old Belgian tactician went candid on his team Bafana Bafana's chances in the tournament.

Speaking after leading the team to round 16, Hugo Broos said his team will go all the way to the final as they have what it takes to do so having qualified from the toughest group in the competition.

"We aim to qualify for the final. Why not? We have a good team and I am very confident. You have to have some goals to achieve. Our first goal was to pass the group stage even though we were not in an easy group with Tunisia and Mali."

Who is Hugo Broos?

Hugo Broos is a 71-year-old Belgian professional football manager. He is also a former Belgium national team player, having won 24 caps with the team from 1974 to 1986.

As a player, Broos played for two top Belgium clubs - Anderlecht and Club Brugge from 1970 to 1988 before he called time on his career.

After a heroic career in which he won several domestic and European titles with the clubs, Broos ventured into football management in 1988, starting with Molenbeek.

He had managed several clubs in Belgium, including his former clubs Anderlecht and Club Brugge. Broos has won Belgium First Division both as a player and as a manager with Anderlecht and Club Brugge.

His first national team role was with Cameroon from 2016 to 2017. He led the Indomitable Lions to AFCON trophy in 2017 before returning to Belgium as caretaker manager for Oostende.

The AFCON winner is hoping to recreate his 2017 AFCON success with Cameroon with South Africa. He could become the second manager in AFCON history to win two AFCON trophies with two different national teams after Herve Renard, who won the continental showpiece with Ivory Coast and Zambia.

South Africa booked their place in the 2023 AFCON round 16 after finishing second in Group E with four points. They will take on 2022 World Cup semifinalists Morocco on Tuesday, January 30 for a place in the last 8.
