Cristiano Ronaldo will end 2023 as the highest goalscorer across major leagues in the world.

The Real Madrid and Manchester United legend scored his 54th goal in 2023 in Al Nassr's 4-1 away win over Al Tawoon in Saudi Pro League.

Ronaldo edged out his closest rivals Harry Kane of Bayern Munich and Kylian Mbappe of PSG, who have 52 goals each.

Erling Haaland of Manchester City completed the top four goalscorers in 2023 with 50 goals.

Ronaldo was able to see off Kane and Mbappe as both players proceeded on short breaks during the festive period.

However, the Al Nassr forward deserve his flowers for a stellar year with Al Nassr despite nearing the twilights of his career.

It is the fifth time Cristiano Ronaldo has emerged the top scorer in a calendar year.

After moving to Real Madrid in 2008 from Manchester United, Ronaldo took his career to new levels with elite level performance for the Los Blancos.

In 2011, he emerged as the top scorer for the year, and later became the first player to retain topscorer spot for three consecutive years from 2013 to 2015.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo's arch rival Lionel Messi has managed only 28 goals in 2023 with 11 of those goals scored for his new club Inter Miami.

Messi recently added eighth Ballon d'Or award to his laurels' kit, beating Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe to the honour.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo missed out of the Ballon d'Or nominees' for the first time in his career despite his stellar start to the life in Saudi Pro League.

Ronaldo suffered his first Ballon d'Or snub apparently due to his move to Saudi Pro League with a poor rating compared to top leagues in Europe.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi won the Ballon d'Or outside the shores of Europe while at Inter Miami - another lowly-rated football league.

Messi became the first player to clinch the award away from Europe with his 2022 World Cup heroics and performance with PSG counting for him.

Cristiano Ronaldo will face Lionel Messi in what will be the last dance between the two football superstars in a friendly between Al Nassr and Inter Miami in January.
