Abuja’s Dream City Revived: Julius Berger Wins ₦750bn Contract After 11-Year Lull ✨
After more than a decade of setbacks, Abuja’s Centenary City Project is finally back on track!
Key Highlights:
• Contract Awarded: Julius Berger has secured a ₦750 billion deal to kickstart the first phase of Abuja’s Centenary City.
• Stalled for 11 Years: Originally conceived in 2014 under President Goodluck Jonathan, the project faced policy inconsistency and leadership changes that stalled progress.
• Massive Scale: The entire project, spanning four phases, is estimated to cost ₦2.4 trillion.
• Urban Transformation: Designed as Abuja’s foremost urban renewal initiative, it will feature:
• The tallest building in sub-Saharan Africa ️
• 13 branded international hotels
• 150 hectares entertainment park for Nollywood
• Luxury residences, five-star hotels, malls, convention centres, and even a championship golf course ⛳
Economic & Social Impact:
• Job Creation: Phase 1 alone is expected to generate 50,000 jobs during construction and up to 250,000 employments when fully completed.
• Housing & Resettlement: Already, 280 houses have been built for displaced inhabitants, with a target of 857.
• Foreign Investment Magnet: The city is positioned as a global lifestyle hub, designed to attract international investors and boost Nigeria’s profile.
Why the Delay?
According to Dr. Michael Odenigwe Jr., MD of Centenary City Plc, the project stalled due to policy inconsistency across successive governments. But with the current administration’s renewed commitment, the hurdles are now cleared.
Next Steps:
• Phase 1 Works: Julius Berger will handle key infrastructure including roads and residential zones like The Grove Residences, Safari Park Residences, and Ridge Villas.
• Timeline: With proper funding, Phase 1 should be completed in two years, while the entire project is expected within four years.
Big Vision:
“This project will change the landscape of Abuja and put it on the global map,” Odenigwe declared, stressing the city’s harmony with nature and promise of sustainable smart-city solutions.
