The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant 40% increase in the prize money for the winner of the TotalEnergies AFCON 2023 in Côte d’Ivoire.
According to the CAF announcement released on its official website on Thursday, January 4th, the winning team will now receive $7 million; a substantial boost from the $5 million awarded to the winners of the 2021 tournament in Cameroon.
Not only will the winner of the TotalEnergies AFCON Côte d’Ivoire 2023 receive a substantial monetary prize, but the runner-up will also be awarded $4 million.
Additionally, the reward distribution extends to the semi-finalists, with each team in this stage pocketing $2 million.
However, there has been a 27.7% decrease in prize money for the quarter-finalists, who will now receive $1.3 million compared to the $1.8 million awarded at the last AFCON tournament.
As the financial statement for 2023 has not been published yet, one could suggest that the increase in CAF's income is responsible for the rise in the 2023 AFCON prize money.
According to reviews by The ICIR, the CAF's total income was $125,203 million after the publication of the 2022 statement, compared to $103,602 million in 2021.
However, without official confirmation, it is important to wait for the publication of the financial statement and a clear explanation from the CAF before drawing any conclusions about the reasons for changes in prize money.
Meanwhile, CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe expressed his excitement with the progress made in improving the financial award for AFCON and other significant competitions.
Motsepe noted: “CAF has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the Prize Money of the AFCON and all its other major competitions."
He further emphasized on CAF's dedication to advancing football and the welfare of football stakeholders, including Member Associations.
He said: "I am confident that a portion of the Prize Money will contribute to developing football and also benefit all the football stakeholders, as well as assist our Member Associations with their administrations.”
The significant rise in the prize money not only brings an added level of excitement to the AFCON tournament but also demonstrates CAF’s commitment to promoting the advancement and success of football in Africa.
The increased financial rewards are designed to not only recognize outstanding performance but also support the overall growth and longevity of football throughout the continent.
The 34th AFCON tournament will take place in Cote d’Ivoire with 24 nations participating.
The competition is set to kick off next Saturday, January 6, with the inaugural match between host nation Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau.
The prestigious African football tournament will conclude on Sunday, February 11th.
