A Ghana fan reportedly attacked Ghana national team head coach Chris Hughton after Ghana suffered a shock AFCON defeat to Cape Verde.

Ghana opened their 2023 AFCON campaign on a disappointing note settling for a 2-1 defeat to the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde.

Monteiro opened the scoring for Cape Verde in the 17th minute after a dominant display. Ghana fought their way back into the game in the 54th minute.

The Black s
stars closed in on salvaging a point from the game before Cape Verde struck again in the stoppage time to condemn the four-time AFCON champions to a defeat.

It was a shocking defeat as no one gave Cape Verde, who were making their fourth appearance in the tournament, a chance against the Black Stars.

Ghana fans were left fuming with the outcome of the match. From the stands, disgruntled fans could be seen remonstrating in displeasure with the team's management.

After the game, some fans took their anger away from the Stadium to the team's hotel. According to Saddick Adams, one of the fans attacked Chris Hughton, Ghana national team head coach, after the game.

The report adds that Ghanaian diplomats had to wade in and rescue the manager immediately before handing him over to the police.

One member of the Ghanaian supporters in Abidjan has been arrested for an attack on coach Chris Hughton at the team's hotel.

'It took the intervention of some Ghanaian diplomats who were around to save the coach. The unidentified man has been handed to the Ivorian Police," Saddick Adams wrote on social media.

At that stage, it looked like we could go on and win it. We are hugely, hugely disappointed with our result.

'And I know and this group of players also know how the Ghanaian people see this game, see this tournament, and our expectations going into this one.
