Nigeria Super Eagles have booked their ticket for 2023 AFCON round 16 after a narrow 1-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau in their final Group B fixture.
The Super Eagles needed at least a draw to seal their place in the next round of the competition after setting for a draw in their opening match and defeating Ivory Coast by a lone goal in the second game.
The three-time African champions got off the mark with a classic, dominating proceedings going forward. Despite their commanding presence from the start, it was a game of minimal chances for both sides.
The Jose Peseiro-led side were toothless in Guinea-Bissau's half, managing limited touches, and struggling to create clearcut chances.
With the half hour crossed, it was still barren as both sides failed to find the back of the net. Guinea-Bissau made little effort upfront but maintained a good attacking flair when breaking out on counters.
In the 36th, they finally succumbed to Nigeria's constant pressure as Sangante forced the ball into his net to give Nigeria the lead.
The mistaken goal was enough to send the Super Eagles into the break with a lead. Guinea-Bissau improved their game in the second half, matching the Super Eagles toe-to-toe on possession, completed passes, and frequent attempts.
The game gradually opened up on both ends with both sides maintaining a constant attacking disposition when with the ball.
With few minutes left to play, the Super Eagles failed to add to the tally but held in to salvage a narrow 1-0 victory to book their place in the next round of the tournament.
