The Africa Cup of Nations will kick off in Cameroon on Sunday, January 9, and conclude on Sunday, February 6, 2022.


Group Stage: Sunday, January 9 to Thursday, January 20

Round of 16: Sunday, January 23 to Wednesday, January 26

Quarter-final: Saturday, January 29 to Sunday, January 30

Semi-finals: Wednesday, February 2 to Thursday, February 3

Third place play-off: Sunday, February 6

Final: Sunday, February 6

Buhari asked the Super Eagles to win the AFCON

The President, Major Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has charged the Super Eagles to do Nigeria proud at the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations by lifting the coveted trophy in Cameroon.

Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, conveyed the president’s message at a ‘send forth’ ceremony for the team on Tuesday in Abuja ahead of their departure to Cameroon.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Eagles will depart Abuja on Wednesday aboard a chartered flight for the football fiesta which runs from January 9 to February 6 in Cameroon.

Dare who was represented by the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Clem Agba, said President Buhari had pledged the full support of the nation for the team.


“I bring to you very warm greetings and best wishes from the President and Commander in Chief, Muhammadu Buhari.

“He sends you forth with a clear message of total support and trust in your ability to do Nigeria proud.

“Mr President believes this Super Eagles squad has the skills and talents to excel at the Cup of Nations in Cameroon. Nigerians are fully behind you,” Dare said.

Update: Watford finally release Ismaila Sarr to Senegal for Africa Cup of Nations

Watford midfielder, Ismaila Sarr has finally been released by his club to join up with Senegal’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations finals, ending a riff between the club and country.


The Senegal Football Federation said in a statement that Sarr had departed London on Tuesday to join up with the squad, after initially not being released by the Premier League club.

Watford had said that Sarr was injured and not fit to compete after being accused of stopping the player from going to this month’s tournament in Cameroon.



Senegal accused Watford of providing “spurious” reasons for denying Sarr permission to travel but the Premier League club invited the Senegalese to send their own doctor to assess his injury.


“Ismaila Sarr suffered a knee ligament injury on November 20 in the match against Manchester United and has not been fit to play for Watford since,” the club said.


“In early December, the club wrote to the Senegal Football Federation outlining the clinical diagnosis of Ismaila's injury and immediately followed that up by supplying the MRI scans detailing the extent of the injury. After further consultation with medical experts, we informed the federation of Ismaila's rehabilitation process and likely time frame of recovery.

Ighalo could miss Afcon 2021, Feyenoord's Dessers the potential replacement

Ighalo was not released by his Saudi Arabia club Al Shabab owing to contractual reasons.

Before joining the White Lion from Shanghai Shenhua in 2021, the 2019 Afcon top scorer signed a clause that he would not be involved in international duties.

Prior to that move, Ighalo had announced his retirement from the Nigeria national team, however, he was recalled by Gernot Rohr as the German moved to solve the Super Eagles’ worrisome attacking line.

As it stands, the Nigeria Football Federation, Confederation of African Football and Federation of International Football Association are in talks with the Prince Khalid bin Sultan Stadium giants.

Ahmed Muss says this will be his last competition as a Super Eagle player. Alcon 2022 will be his last.
“Musa, who is the national team’s most-capped player, also said he has charged his teammates to win the the2021 AFCON as a “parting gift for me”.


He said: “I think this is my last AFCON InShaa Allah.

“I have spoken to the boys that this is the only gift you can give to me because this is my last AFCON. And the boys told me that they are ready.

“My first AFCON was in South Africa in 2013 and we ended up winning it. And my second appearance was in Egypt and we won the bronze.”

African cup of Nations score update: Ghana lost to underdog Comoros 2 – 3

Ghana fumbled the game heavily today as they lost a game that is almost a guaranteed win for them. Ghana was down by two goals early in the game before they equalized 2 – 2. But the Blackstar end up losing the match 2 – 3 to Comoros. Comoros was the underdog and a very small country in the 2022 African Cup of Nations tournament. Surprisingly, they came up victorious and eliminated Ghana from the making it to the next round.

The giants missed out on the knockout stages for the first time in more than a decade, while their opponents celebrated their first AFCON win

Ghana and Arsenal star Thomas Partey faces an early return from the African Cup of Nations after his side were eliminated on Tuesday in a shock defeat at the hands of the Comoros.


The Black Stars went into the final round of Group C fixtures needing a victory to stay in the competition following a loss to Morocco and a draw with Gabon.

Egypt beat Cameroon in today's Afcon match and they will play Senegal in the Afcon Final

Egypt beat Cameroon today February 3, 2022,

Both Egypt and Cameroon played a 0 - 0 draw in today's match and then they headed to penalty and Egypt won 3 - 1. There was some refereeing controversy in the game, some people thought the referee was trying to keep Cameroon in the game but that was unsuccessful because Eqypt ended up winning the match. Egypt advances to the 2022 AFCON final without Mo Salah in the game and they will face Senegal in the final. The host, Cameroon will compete for 3rd place against Burkina Faso.

According to ESPN " Goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabal pulled off two spectacular saves as Egypt edged hosts Cameroon 3-1 in the penalty shootout to reach the final of Africa Cup of Nations following a goalless draw after extra time on Thursday."
