Al Ettifaq manager and Liverpool/Premier League legend Steven Gerrard is leading the pursuit for David de Gea with reports from Saudi outlets a deal is imminent.

De Gea has tarried as a free agent since he left Manchester United in June 2023. While he has come across offers from Saudi and top European clubs, the Spanish shotstopper seemed to have set his standards too high.

De Gea was first contacted by Inter Milan after he was released by Manchester United. Negotiations were underway between him and the Serie A outfit before reports emerged he has back off from a deal as they could not agree on wage offer.

Bayern Munich were also linked to the player but a deal could not come through as well.

Recently, David de Gea is now courted by country clubs with Real Betis leading the list of La Liga clubs ready to tap into the wealth of his experience.

Also, David de Gea had a golden chance for a reunion with fellow Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr. Al Nassr reportedly splashed a lucrative £50,000 weekly wage offer for de Gea but met rejection due to the influence of his wife Edurne Garcia.

With the piling list of clubs that David de Gea had rejected, a move to Al Ettifaq could be more of a surprise than a given.

It is believed de Gea turned down numerous offers because he wanted to continue his career with top-tier European teams.

Inter Milan and Bayern Munich would have afforded him the golden chance to stay not just in Europe but enjoy top-tier European football in Champions League.

Al Ettifaq was the less likely of destinations for the Man United star. However, should the belated move happen, Steven Gerrard must have probably played a very big role in the move due to his experience in English football.

De Gea left Manchester United in top shape. He won the Golden Glove last season and played a crucial role in returning Manchester United to Champions League and winning the EFL Cup.
