Salawa Abeni is a well-known Nigerian singer. Her full name is Salawa Abeni Alidu. She is popularly known as the Queen of Waka. She is a Yoruba woman from Ijebu waterside in Ogun state, Nigeria. She has been acting in the music industry since 1975 and she is still active. Her name, queen of Waka came to be because her career began in Waka music which is an Islamic-Yoruba music genre. She was crowned the queen of Waka in 1992 by the Alaafin of Oyo, who is Oba Lamidi Adeyemi. It was Alhaja Batile who made Waka music popular before Queen Salawa Abeni came into the waka music scene.
She released her debut album in 1976 and it was titled Late General Murtala Ramat Mohammed. The song was released on a record label known as Leader records. This album became very popular, and it sold over a million copies. She eventually left leader records in the year 1986 when her relationship with the owner of the record label who is Alhaja Lateef Adepoju, ended. From here, she joined Kollington Ayinla’s record label after she married him. There is no record of when she got married but there are records of the years, she split from her husbands. She split from Lateef Adepoju in 1986 and then left Kollington Ayinla in 1994.
