Amazon (AMZN) has made a bold $500 million investment in nuclear energy, signaling a strategic push toward sustainability and reinforcing its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. This move is part of Amazon's broader Climate Pledge, aligning the tech giant with global efforts to reduce carbon footprints while diversifying its energy portfolio.

The investment triggered a surge in nuclear-related stocks, including Oklo (OKLO), NuScale Power (SMR), Nano Nuclear Energy (NNE), and Lightbridge (LTBR). The focus on nuclear power highlights the increasing role of tech companies in driving the adoption of renewable and clean energy sources.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced three significant agreements to advance nuclear energy production, including building small modular reactors (SMRs). One notable partnership is with Energy Northwest, where Amazon will support the construction of four SMRs in Washington, initially generating 320 MW of electricity with plans to scale capacity to 960 MW. These innovative reactors are part of a broader effort to increase energy resilience and sustainability in the U.S.

In collaboration with X-energy, Amazon will also enhance manufacturing capabilities for SMR components, aiming to supply five gigawatts of new nuclear projects. Another major initiative involves a partnership with Dominion Energy of Virginia to implement an SMR near the North Anna nuclear power station, delivering at least 300 MW to the region.

Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, emphasized that nuclear energy is a scalable, carbon-free power source that can help companies and industries meet their sustainability goals. Amazon’s aggressive investment in nuclear energy not only accelerates its own green agenda but also reinforces the tech sector's shift toward renewable energy as a long-term solution.

This investment underscores Amazon's leadership in sustainability and innovation, setting the stage for nuclear energy to play a key role in the global transition to carbon-free energy.
