Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu has agreed to a new contract extension with Arsenal. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Arsenal board have decided to offer the Japanese defender a new contract following his standout performance for the club.

The duration and terms of the new deal are yet to be revealed but close sources have revealed it will be a long-term contract. The former Bologna defender had 12 months remaining on his Arsenal contract, including an extension option till 2026 but will now pen down fresh new terms with the London outfit.

Tomiyasu joined Arsenal from Bologna in 2021, signing a four-year contract with the club. Multiple reports pecked Tomiyasu's transfer fee at £16million. Known for his physicality and great composure with the ball, the highly-rated defender has remained an important player for Arsenal. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and director Edu described Tomiyasu as 'a key player' for the team easily fitting into the style of play and philosophy at the Emirates after signing him from Bologna in 2021.

The 25-year-old made 21 Premier League appearances for Arsenal in his first season, registered another 21 league appearances last season, and has made 13 appearances for the club this season.

As per the Standards, Arsenal began contract renewal talks with Tomiyasu in November 2023. The club made it clear they have no intention to sell the player amid interest from top clubs in Europe. With a year remaining on his contract, Tomiyasu was reportedly keen on signing a new deal with the club but reports still linked him to an exit from the Emirates.

The contract renewal plan brings the Japanese to par with other elite players at the Emirates whose contracts have been renewed by the club.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, second-choice goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, wingers Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, and defenders William Saliva and Gabriel Magalhaes have all signed new contracts with the club.

Tomiyasu joined Japan for the 2024 Asian Cup but is due back to Arsenal and would likely make the club's matchday squad for West Ham as Japan got knocked out of the Asian Cup by Iran.
