Arsenal are set to terminate the contract of Alex Runnarson to pave the way for his exit from the club, as per Fabrizio Romano.

The Reykjavik-born goalkeeper has been an out-of-favor player at Arsenal since joining the club from Ligue 2 side Dijon in 2020.

Runnarson, 28, signed a four-year contract with Arsenal. His contract was set to expire at the end of this season. Since moving to the London club, Runnarson has made only one Premier League appearance for Arsenal and has spent his four years on loan to different clubs.

On August 31, 2021, the Iceland footballer went on his first loan move to Belgian club OH Leuven, where he made 18 appearances. In 2022, he went on another season-long loan to Alanyaspor in Turkey, where he made 30 appearances for the club. He is currently on another season-long loan deal to Championship club Cardiff City. At Cardiff, the former Nordjaeslland goalkeeper has made 6 appearances for the club and was set to return to Arsenal when his loan tenure expires at the end of the season. By then, he would have come to the end of his four-year contract with Arsenal but Arsenal decided to terminate the deal and allow him to leave the club for free.

According to Fabrizio Romano, a deal with Danish champions FC Copenhagen is already in progress for Alex Runnarson. He will join the club as a free agent hoping to breathe life back into his career after his Arsenal nightmare.

Despite his Arsenal deadlock, Runnarson is still active with the Iceland national team. He has been capped 27 times with the team since making his debut in 2017.

Elsewhere on Arsenal transfers, we reported earlier Mikel Arteta is not ready to do any deal this January but is hoping to sign a striker at the end of the summer with Nigerian attacking sensation Victor Osimhen top on the Gunners' summer target, including Brentford forward Ivan Toney.
