Serie A giants AS Roma have parted ways with Jose Mourinho as the club's manager.
Roma confirmed the sack of Mourinho with a club statement which reads;
"Roma have decided to part ways with Jose Mourinho. We thank Mourinho for all he has done for the club and wish him success on his future endeavors."
Mourinho, famously known as the special one, joined Roma as manager in 2021 He signed a three-year contract which was set to expire in June 2024.
There were reports linking him to an exit from the club at the end of the season when his deal expires but Mourinho repeatedly denied such reports.
Last summer he was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia with Al Ittihad and Saudi Arabia national team job on the table but the Portuguese turned them down.
Mourinho confirmed in a podcast he turned down 'huge offer' from Saudi Arabia as he hoped to stay put with Roma. Meanwhile, his future at the club was still in the balance.
Mourinho won the maiden edition of the European Conference League in 2022 for Roma. In 2023, he led the team to the Europa League final where they lost to Sevilla on shootouts.
Sources close to the club have revealed Mourinho was tasked to qualify Roma for the Champions League. Winning the Europa League final would have booked a Champions League group stage slot for Roma. Hence, the Portuguese was expected to challenge for a top-four finish this season and qualify the team for the Champions League next season.
Against expectations, Roma's Serie A fortunes this season has been on the decline. They are 9th on the table with 29 points, 22 points adrift of league leaders Inter Milan, and 5 points away from the top four.
Mourinho's sack is linked to the recent dismal campaign by the club. The Giallarossi suffered back-to-back defeats, losing to AC Milan in Serie A, and Lazio in Coppa Italia quarterfinal.
Former Roma player Daniele de Rossi is reportedly set to be named as his successor with Mourinho expected to take up a new offer soon.
