Asisat Oshoala hailed Victor Osimhen, as the Napoli forward, was crowned the CAF's Men's Footballer of the Year on Monday, December 11, 2023, in Morocco.

Following the announcement of Osimhen as the CAF Men's Player of the Year for 2023, Oshoala expressed admiration for her fellow Nigerian compatriot, saying, "Come on, Victor, that's my boy!!!"

Osimhen emerged victorious over Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah.

This recent award marks a remarkable year for the Super Eagles forward, who, with a historic achievement in Marrakech, brought an end to Nigeria’s 24-year-long wait for Africa’s top individual honor.

The award comes barely two months after the Ballon d'Or award ceremony, where Osimhen finished 8th on the podium, becoming the first Nigerian to finish in the top 10 of the Ballon d'Or ranking.

The last Nigerian to win CAF player of the year award was the legendary Kanu Nwankwo in 1999.

Victor Osimhen fired Napoli to their first scudetto since 1990, whilst scoring 26 times, being the first African to win top scorer and striker of the year awards in the same season.

The ex-Wolfsburg player also scored ten goals for the Super Eagles team as Nigeria qualified for the African Cup of Nations next year.

Asisat Oshoala clinched CAF's Women's Player of the Year award for an unprecedented sixth time, thanks to her role in guiding Barcelona to Champions League success.

Oshoala, 29, surpassed South Africa's Thembi Kgatlana and Zambia's Barbara Banda to maintain her title during Monday's awards ceremony in Marrakech.

Additionally, Oshoala's teammate, Chiamaka Nnadozie, secured her inaugural CAF Women's Goalkeeper of the Year award.

The captain of Paris FC claimed the pioneering prize by surpassing Morocco's Khadija Er-Rmichi and South Africa's Andile Dlamini, who were also contenders.

Overall, it was a good night for Nigerians as they swept the major awards in four different categories.

Desiree Ellis, the coach of South Africa's senior women's national team, retains her accolade, having led the team to their maiden TotalEnergies CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations victory and their second appearance in the FIFA Women's World Cup. She previously won this honor in 2018, 2019, and 2022.

Yassine Bounou, from Morocco, secured the CAF award for Best African Goalkeeper, triumphing over Cameroon's Andre Onana and Egypt's Mohamed El-Shenawy.
