The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari's administration to sign the 2009 agreement reached between the government and the union.

On Thursday, the union stated that this is required to end the union's ongoing strike.

For the past three months, university lecturers on the ASUU platform have been on strike.

The union had previously declared a two-month warning strike before beginning the indefinite strike.

The union is urging the federal government to implement the 2009 agreements it signed with the federal government as part of its arguments.

It was discovered that both union and government representatives had met in order to resolve the issue, but the issues remained unresolved.

The union argued that the president and his appointees' attitude toward the strike since it began over two months ago demonstrated that they had no intention of resolving the issue.

The union claimed that the political elites were not prepared to provide quality education for the children of the masses by committing to funding and signing a new decent welfare package for ASUU members.

Professor Ayo Akinwole, Chairman of the ASUU chapter at the University of Ibadan, stated on Thursday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, that funding education remains the best way to shape the minds of youths.

In a statement made public, Akinwole stated that the ruling government should ensure that more children are dropping out of school.

"ASUU began the ongoing strike on February 14, 2022, to force the government to implement outstanding 2009 agreements on revitalization funding, earned academic allowances, university proliferation, and to sign a re-negotiated agreement with the union."

"To fight for a country and a future for the poor's children from the government's traders of collective patrimony."

"If you fund education, educated youths' minds will be built to resist being used for criminality, but since the government has been responsive, the funding war may become another opportunity where some people make millions."

They are unconcerned about the growing number of out-of-school children, nor are they concerned about the facilities to which Nigerian children are exposed.

ASUU believes that building human capacity and minds through purposeful funding of education by federal, state, and local governments is a smarter way of controlling growing insecurity and redirecting the minds of Nigerian youths to constructive and developmental activities.
