Gabriel Paulista has completed a move to Atletico Madrid on a free transfer, after terminating his deal with Valencia by mutual consent.

Los Colchoneros was keen on a move to the Wanda Metropolitano and he has fully joined the Madrid-based club after passing a medical on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.

Before the defender's medical was finalized, Paulista had a verbal agreement with Atletico Madrid, and as such the deal was completed without much hassle.

Confirming the arrival of Gabriel Paulista to the 2020/21 La Liga champions, the club took to their official website, writing:

“Gabriel Paulista (November 26, 1990, São Paulo, Brazil) is a new Atlético de Madrid player after signing until the end of the season.”

The Madrid-based club also revealed that the defender “passed the relevant medical examination at the Vithas Madrid Arturo Soria University Hospital and subsequently signed his contract with our entity.”

It is uncertain if Paulista's deal with Atletico Madrid will be extended at the end of the 2023/24 season, with his contract set to expire during that time frame.

However, it can be said that if Gabriel Paulista performs excellently, his contract will likely be improved.

Paulista has played for several notable clubs in his career, including; Villarreal, Arsenal, and Valencia.

The 33-year-old joined Valencia on August 18, 2017, for a fee of €11 million and he made 220 appearances for the club, scoring 8 goals and providing 5 assists in all competitions.

He began his career at Brazilian side Esporte Clube Vitória before leaving the club to join Villarreal in 2013.

The former Brazil international has won just 4 trophies in his career, including; 2 Campeonato Baiano, 2 FA Cups, 1 Community Shield, and 1 Copa del Rey.

He will be coming into Atletico Madrid to provide his defensive input, with the team conceding 23 league goals this campaign.

Diego Simeone's side have been known over the years for their defensive astuteness and rigidity.

Los Colchoneros sit 3rd on the La Liga table, with 44 points from 21 matches this campaign.

Atletico Madrid are 10 points adrift of second-placed Real Madrid, who have amassed 54 points this campaign, while Girona, who sit at the summit of the log have amassed 55 points.

They are aiming to win the league crown this term, having last won the title in the 2020/21 season.

Atletico Madrid have won 11 league titles in history, and they will be aiming to improve that tally.

Anyway, Diego Simeone's side returns to action on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, facing Rayo Vallecano in a Matchday 20 La Liga action.

Gabriel Paulista will be hoping to make his debut in the game, but he will be competing against top defenders like Axel Witsel, Stefan Savic, and Mario Hermoso for a starting shirt.
