A legendary and fierce match between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid on Thursday, January 18, required extra time to determine the winner.

Ultimately, Atletico Madrid emerged victorious with a 4-2 victory, thanks to individual mistakes from Real Madrid players and Griezmann's unbelievable solo goal in extra time that made the difference.

How the match unfolded

In the first half, Atletico Madrid opened the score sheet after a mistake by Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger.

Samuel Lino capitalized on the former Blues defender and scored the first goal in the 39th minute at Civitas Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.

However, Real Madrid managed to equalize in stoppage time when Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak scored an own goal while attempting to clear a cross from Luka Modric.

Former Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata then gave Atletico Madrid a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute, taking advantage of a mistake by Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

However, the visitors were not done yet, as they leveled the score at 2-2 in the 82nd minute when Joselu headed in a quick pass from teammate Jude Bellingham.

During extra time, Atletico Madrid's French sensation Antoine Griezmann netted a fantastic solo goal, bringing the score to 3-2.

In the 119th minute, Diego Simeone's team secured a 4-2 victory with a counter-attacking goal by Rodrigo Riquelme, knocking defending champions Real Madrid out of the tournament.

Atletico Madrid last won the Copa del Rey in 2013 and they are on the verge of winning it as they advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Barcelona advanced to the Copa del Rey Quarterfinals

Meanwhile, Barcelona secured a 3-1 victory over Unionistas de Salamanca; a lower-division club, to advance to the quarterfinals on Thursday, January 18.

The Catalans picked up the pace in the second half and will be making their second consecutive appearance in the last eight of the Copa del Rey.

This victory comes after their loss to Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday, January 14, placing them under pressure.

Despite being held 1-1 at half-time, Barcelona improved to secure the win with goals from Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde.

Álvaro Gomez gave the hosts the lead with a beautiful one-timer in the 31st minute, but Ferran Torres equalized for Barcelona with a breakaway goal in the 45th minute.

Koundé scored with a long-range shot in the 69th minute and Balde sealed the victory with a strike from a tight angle in the 73rd minute.
