Barcelona have confirmed injury blows to Frenkie De Jong and Pedri during Barcelona LaLiga match against Athletic Bilbao.

The Catalans were held to a goalless draw by Athletic Bilbao, missing a chance to narrow the gap on league leaders and arch-rivals Real Madrid.

It was a disappointing outing for the Bluagrana more so with the double injury blow involving Frenkie De Jong and Pedri.

Just 26 minutes into the game, Frenkie De Jong saw himself landing awkwardly on the ground after he went for a high ball. Sprawling on the ground, the Dutch groaned with pain and had to be carted off play with Fermin Lopez coming on to replace him.

In the final minutes of the game, the Catalans were dealt another big blow as Pedri picked up an apparent ankle injury.

Facing the prospects of a lengthy injury layoff, Pedri was down to tears as he limped off the field.

Addressing the injury fears on the two players, Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez said it was sad having to lose the players but was optimistic they could return to action soon.

"The injuries to Pedri and De Jong is not looking good and we are sad about the absences but it would be for only a few games," Xavi said in post-match press conference.

As of the time of filing this report, it is yet to be determined when the pair will recover to return to action for the Blaugrana but it is more likely they are going to miss a couple of games.

Barcelona confirmed in a club statement that Frenkie De Jong suffered a sprain in his right ankle while Pedri suffered an injury to his right quadriceps.

The statement adds the two players are literally ruled out of action with their availability to be determined by how fast they can recover.

"Frenkie de Jong has a lateral ligament sprain in his right ankle. Pedri has a right quadriceps injury.

"Both players are out and their recovery will determine their availability," Barcelona club statement reads.

Barcelona have a LaLiga match against Mallorca in their next fixture before playing Napoli in Champions League round 16 reverse fixture.

D Jong and Pedri are set to miss the two matches but could return to action before the end of the season, as per sources close to the club.
