Singer Wizkid opened up in a recent interview with MixMag on his life, his career as one of Nigeria's biggest music stars, his family life, and how it is a privilege to headline the Tottenham Hotspur stadium on July 29.
Speaking on his upcoming show on July 29, he appreciated his fans and their impact on how his music has grown over the years. He said, "It's not just me. It's the fans, it is the support of the music and culture. We all did it together,” he says. “I don’t think one man makes anything happen.”
Kelechi Okafor, the interviewer, asked him how he stays grounded in his career. He responded by acknowledging the presence of his team, management and his woman saying, "Well I believe that behind every successful man is a beautiful woman, there's a team, there's management, there's producers...I work with people, people don't work for me. And once I start working with anyone, I consider that person family. We’re all just trying to win."
He also spoke on how his upbringing and past struggles shaped his thinking and view about life. He said he has always strived to be better all his life.
"When you grow up, from the environment you grow up in - especially for me - I just knew that I just wanted better for myself. Striving and hustling to be better has always been in blood. I’ve always had that belief — you have to believe it,”
He said he has always believed that everyone has a mission in life and his music is his mission to live. Though there are a lot of things he didn't do while growing up, he considers himself a kid at heart.
He elaborated,“I guess that is why I'm still a kid at heart, because there's a lot of things I didn't do, but I see that everyone has a mission in life and this is mine.",
He spoke on his relationship with his children and says he wants to be able to give his children a legacy, instilling positive energy in them and good morals. The singer has four sons with three women.
"For me, just being the best dad that I can possibly be. Give legacies that they can live by and the right visual examples. It is a crazy world we live in and you are your kids' first teacher. Without even saying any words, they watch the way you move, the way you do things, they learn from that. Just instilling positive energy and good morals into my kids and the next generation is my biggest goal.", He said.
