The boat was a tourist boat and the incident happened in Kerala state located in southern India.
The boat which was a double decker boat was packed with many people.
Rescue efforts are still ongoing. The boat which sank was pulled out of the water and the number of casualties may increase since the rescue is still in process.
Abdul Nazarwho is the junior superintendent of police of Malappuram district gave reports on the incident. He said it was overcrowding on the boat that led to the sinking of the boat.
Reports states that the boat was conveying about 50 people which was double the capacity of the boat and it overturned and capsized.
The prime minister of India who is Narendra Modi, has expressed condolences. He shared this on twitter. He says it was a painful loss of lives.
Many of the causality include females and children.
When the boat overturned, many people were trapped under the boat for a long time.
They have taken at least 4 people who were in critical condition to the hospital.
Many of these passengers were not wearing life jackets when the incident occurred.
The authorities don't know the exact number of missing passengers yet.
