The English Premier League has announced that AFC Bournemouth's game against Luton Town will be played in full after the on-field cardiac arrest issue suffered by Luton Town skipper Tom Lockyer on Saturday, December 16.
The original match at Vitality Stadium was suspended when Luton's Tom Lockyer collapsed on the field.
What happened to Tom Lockyer?
The Luton Town captain collapsed in the 59th minute of Saturday's game after he suffered a cardiac arrest, which thereafter resulted in the match being postponed.
It was later disclosed that he had suffered a cardiac arrest, and the club have called for tolerance as he continues receiving treatment until his recovery.
Luton Town had looked to be heading for an important three points at one stage, following a 1-0 lead through Elijah Adebayo's early goal, but that strike was balanced when Dominic Solanke equalized for the home team in the second half.
Thereafter, Lockyer was filmed on the ground in an off-the-ball occurrence, with the Cherries midfielder Philip Billing having to call the attention of the match officials to the incident.
The 29-year-old Welsh International was then given extensive treatment on the pitch before being taken off on a stretcher and being taken to the hospital afterward.
The game was suspended as officials and players moved to one side of the field before they went back to the dressing rooms a few minutes later.
The rest of Luton Town players and head coach Rob Edwards returned to the pitch shortly after the abandonment had been announced, as they applauded the spectators for their support.
The event brought back sad memories from May's Championship final when Tom Lockyer was stretchered off after he collapsed on the field in just the 11th minute of play.
The Welshman had recorded 15 appearances for Luton in all competitions before Saturday's game unexpectedly ended for him.
However, a date is yet to be fixed for the rescheduled fixture, but the Premier League have confirmed it will not restart at 1-1 after 59 minutes.
What the Premier League said about the match rearrangement
On Wednesday, December 20, A Premier League statement was released saying the match would begin afresh.
The statement reads; "The decision to abandon the match in the 59th minute was made collectively between the match officials, players, managers from both clubs and the Premier League".
"The league would like to thank the medical staff and all those involved for their swift actions in responding to what was an extremely upsetting situation for everyone".
It added; "We wish Tom a continued recovery and our thoughts are with him, his family, and all those at Luton Town FC".
What's next?
It remains to be seen when the match will be played as fans and football lovers look forward to seeing Tom back in good health condition.
In the meantime, Luton will take on Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday, December 23, while Bournemouth will lock horns with Nottingham Forest on the same day.
