Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United will miss out on his club's essential trip to Liverpool after picking up a yellow card in an embarrassing loss to Bournemouth.

The Portuguese playmaker was shown a yellow card for engaging in an argument with referee Peter Bankes during the dying stages of his club's humiliating 3-0 setback at Old Trafford on Saturday, December 9.

The yellow card was awarded after a disagreement with the official, which was his fifth of the season, meaning he will be forced to watch the battle at Anfield from the sideline.

Man United remain three points towards the Champions League spots after their home defeat to Andoni Iraola's side but have played more games than their rivals.

Dominic Solanke made an early breakthrough to astonish the home fans before second-half goals from Philip Billing and Marcos Senesi capped off an unhappy outing for the Red Devils.

Bruno Fernandes has started every Premier League contest for Man United this season, scoring five goals and dashing out five assists across the top-flight and Champions League.

His booking will see him serve out a one-match ban.

The 29-year-old's yellow card came in the 84th minute after a foul on Bournemouth defender Adam Smith, when the visitors were already leading by three goals.

However, Bruno Fernandes has missed more games (4) due to suspension than missing matches through injury (3) in his career.

Therefore, the former Sporting CP captain will prove a big miss for Man United on Merseyside. Last season, Ten Hag's side were crushed in a 7-0 destruction job and will be heavy underdogs again this season without the service of Fernandes.

Man United's triumph against Chelsea in mid-week rebuilt a show of hope at the club, though this positiveness was stabbed following the latest surprise defeat.

Speaking after the match against Bournemouth, Fernandes said; "We lacked many things and that's why we didn't get the result today".

"Everything was lower than the levels in the game before and that's why when you play teams like Bournemouth, who are really aggressive, they press you, and you think it's going to be easy, you get this kind of results".

He added; "Today, it was underperforming. We lack consistency and that's a big part of football. It's really important to be consistent every game and we're not".

What's next for Bruno Fernandes?

The Red Devils captain will shift his attention to Manchester United's upcoming clash with Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League where they'll be hoping to advance to the knockout stage if they beat the German giant.
