Nigerian superstar Burna Boy has been under serious attack following the statement he made in an interview saying the music genre Afrobeats has no substance.
Burna Boy declared during the interview that he doesn't even know what Afrobeats is, that is why he created his own sound called Afro-fusion.
He said, "Afrobeats as you people call it, is mostly about nothing. There's no substance to it. Nobody is talking about anything."
He mentioned that music should be the essence of an artist. Speaking about himself, he said an artist should be able to give to the audience his life experiences in the form of music.
"If I give you something like this with my face on it and my name", pointing to a piece in his hand, he continued, "I should be giving you that experience. That should be a window to giving you that essence.", he added.
However, netizens and music enthusiasts have reacted heavily to Burna Boy's statement about the Afrobeats genre having no substance.
Some said Burna Boy shouldn't be the one giving the West such an impression about African music because he relies heavily on sampling American music.
