Recall the ugly incident that happened on Saturday, June 24, where a boat conveying 14 medical students capsized in Cross River, Calabar. These
students were reported to have gone on a boat cruise in Marina Resort, Calabar.

When the boat crashed, eleven of them were rescued and rushed to the hospital, while three others allegedly drowned. They finally found their bodies, and report stated that they were 1 female and 2 male students.

Gyogon Grimah, Calabar State Commissioner of Police, confirmed the recent news on Monday.

He commended the Police and the rescue team for their efforts in minimizing the casualties.

However, the General Manager at National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Jibril Darda’u, confirmed the arrest of the boat operators in a statement released on Monday, June 26.

According to the investigations gathered, the boat capsized due to overloading, heavy turbulence, engine malfunctioning, and rainy weather.

Jibril further stated the said boat isn't duly registered nor approved with NIWA. He expressed his condolences to the parents of the deceased medical students and prayed for their souls to rest in peace.

Jibril continued his prayer by praying the deceased parents have the mental fortitude to bear the sudden loss of their children.

Here is what the Calabar police said about the incident.
