Ryan Mendes' late penalty secured the well-deserved win for Cape Verde against Mauritania in the 2023 African Cup of Nations.

Cape Verde were the better team in the game, with better chances falling on their part, but they failed to take it.

Bebe, who had played exceptionally well in the tournament, failed to find the back of the net, with Mauritania goalkeeper Niasse pulling some outstanding saves.

Mauritania, on the other hand, had several chances to put the game to bed, but they were not clinical enough.

Mauritania's last-minute mistake led to the penalty Ryan Mendes converted.

How Cape Verde Qualified For The Next Round Of The African Cup Of Nations After They Defeated Mauritania

Both Cape Verde and Mauritania started well in the first 15 minutes of the match, but they looked vulnerable to counterattacks with too much space in between.

Earlier in the second half, Cape Verde came close to scoring a goal, but Bebe's attempt was not strong enough, with the Mauritania players clearing off the danger.

In the 59th minute of the match, Mauritania's Anne had a chance to score from 10 yards, but he was not quick enough to tap the ball into the net.


Cape Verde forced the Mauritania national team to set back a string of passes in the second half. They came close to scoring a goal in the 76th minute, but a Kamara header was not enough.

Mauritania goalkeeper Niasse was forced into a save by a beautiful header from Mendes in the 80th minute of the match.

In the 83rd minute of the match, Mauritania had rare chances, but they wasted them. The team should have gone ahead against Cape Verde.

Cape Verde got a penalty in the late minutes of the second half when Mauritania winger Elwely wanted to head the ball back to the goalkeeper.

In an attempt to do so, he laid the ball down to Gilson, who got cleared in the 18-yard box by the rushing Mauritania goalkeeper Niasse.

Ryan Mendes sent Mauritania goalkeeper Niasse to the wrong place to send Cape Verde to the next round of the tournament.

Mauritania, on the other hand, will now focus on the World Cup qualifiers.

Although, both teams have been impressive since the commencement of the tournament, with many spectators writing them off as part of the teams that will qualify for the knockout stage.

What Next for Cape Verde and Mauritania?

The Cape Verde team will wait for the outcome of the match between Senegal and Ivory Coast at 9:00 p.m. Any team who wins the game will face the Cape Verdeans in the quarter-finals.

Mauritania, on the other hand, will play against Sudan in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on June 3, 2024.
