CBN Governor Cardoso Urges Increase in Skilled Finance Graduates to Drive Economic Growth

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, has emphasized the pressing need to address the shortage of skilled professionals in finance-related disciplines across Nigerian universities. During a strategic meeting with key figures including Prof. Adeola Adenikinju, President of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES), and representatives from the Nigerian Economics Students Association (NESA), Cardoso outlined a plan to develop a stronger pipeline of finance talent.

Call for Youth Empowerment and Mentorship
Cardoso underscored the importance of empowering young professionals with the necessary skills to enhance Nigeria’s financial sector. He advocated for mentorship programs that would see the CBN collaborate closely with NES and NESA to equip students with the skills needed to excel in finance. This, he noted, is vital to support the Financial System Strategy aimed at driving Nigeria’s economic growth.

The CBN Governor also highlighted the critical role of communication, urging the simplification of complex economic concepts to better engage the public. He stressed that making monetary policy more understandable is key to fostering a better-informed populace.

Strategic Collaboration for Innovation and Diversity
The meeting also focused on collaboration opportunities between the CBN and academic institutions, with the goal of promoting innovation, diversity, and greater female representation in the finance sector. Cardoso reiterated the CBN’s commitment to supporting these initiatives, particularly in mentoring future leaders in finance and economics.

On his part, Prof. Adenikinju expressed a desire for deeper collaboration with the CBN, particularly in areas like research, internships, and workshops, and called for better use of social media to communicate economic policies more effectively to a wider audience.

This strategic dialogue underscores the CBN’s focus on youth development as a cornerstone for building a competitive and resilient financial sector in Nigeria.
