Chelsea's woes continued on Tuesday, January 9, 2023, as they were defeated by Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash.

Micheal Carrick's side got the breakthrough in the 37th minute through Hayden Hackney and the Blues tried all they could to equalize.

However, their efforts didn't yield anything significant as they returned to Stamford Bridge with their 31st defeat since the commencement of the 2022/23 season.

Chelsea have been utterly poor in recent years despite the heavy investments made to the team.

The Blues have spent over £1 billion to try and get the club back to contending amongst the big teams in England.

But it has been like all their investments have been heading down the drain, with little to show for it.

Since the start of the 2022/23 season, Chelsea have had about 5 managers take charge of the club, namely; Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Bruno Salto, Frank Lampard, and currently Mauricio Pochettino.

The Stamford Bridge club had high hopes coming into the new season, with fans expectant of unbridled success.

However, in all ramifications except the Carabao Cup, they have looked pale, and it seems their form across several competitions is now translating into the League Cup semi-final.

The defeat to Middlesbrough was their first loss of 2024, and were amongst the sides with the most losses in 2023. They will be looking to outstandingly improve.

Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest are the only teams to have lost more games than Chelsea since the start of the 2022/23 season, and indeed it is worrisome that the Blues also have themselves in this mix.

Many have since taken to questioning the mentality, experience levels, and quality of the team, with some individuals saying that they are in this mess because the team is absolutely poor on all fronts.

Chelsea sit 10th on the Premier League table with 28 points from 20 matches, winning 8 games, drawing 4, and losing a whopping 8.

Mauricio Pochettino's side remains in all cup competitions they are participating in this campaign, but they aren't favorites to lift those trophies.

If they continue in the manner in which they have played since the beginning of the 2022/23 season, it's safe to say that the club will remain sinking for a long time to come.

Meanwhile, Chelsea return to action on Saturday, January 13, 2024, facing Fulham, in a Matchday 21 Premier League encounter.

They will be aiming to exert full harm over their incoming opposition, having defeated Marco Silva's side 2-0 in the first leg played at Craven Cottage on Monday, October 2, 2023.

The return leg of their Carabao Cup encounter against Middlesbrough is on January 23, 2024, and Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping that his side can turn the corner in the game.
