Chelsea have been handed a massive setback as two crucial players, Ben Chilwell and Levi Colwill suffered injuries ahead of the Blues' clash with Newcastle United.
The Blues have been hit with injury crises all season and the club announced on Thursday, March 7 that Ben Chilwell has been sent to a specialist for a knee issue he had during their draw against Brentford.
Ben Chilwell and Levi Colwill are the latest Chelsea players to be added to the club's growing injury list.
It is said that Levi Colwill is also starting a rehabilitation programme for a toe injury while Conor Gallagher has reportedly missed training during the week due to illness.
Speaking about a potential return of the aforementioned players to face Newcastle on Monday, Mauricio Pochettino said; "The same situation as last week".
"We need to wait until he sees the specialist, I hope it’s not a big issue but I prefer to be cautious and wait".
"You all know now that we’ve added Levi Colwill and Chilwell to the list of injured players".
"Since Saturday, Gallagher has not been training because he’s got a virus. Let’s see if it’s possible for him (Gallagher) to be available. We need to assess him".
On the club’s injury problems, He added; "It’s very frustrating and disappointing because the situation has never allowed us to work with the full squad".
"Yes, we are suffering this kind of negativity in terms of injuries, but we cannot stop believing and stop working. We need to give confidence to the players who will play on Monday".
Chilwell missed three months with a hamstring injury earlier this season and could have his participation in Chelsea’s run-in and Euro 2024 put in doubt with another lay-off.
Several first-team players including Reece James, Romeo Lavia, and Christopher Nkunku remain absent.
Pochettino has suggested that youth players could be called up to fill voids in the squad for Chelsea’s coming matches.
What's next for Chelsea?
Chelsea welcome Newcastle on Monday as they seek a first win in the league since beating Crystal Palace on February 12.
The West London club currently sits 11th in the Premier League table and faces an uphill battle to qualify for European competition next season. While injuries have been added to the growing issues at Stamford Bridge.
