Chelsea and Tottenham have joined other Premier League clubs to issue statement denouncing the European Super League.
The two London clubs joined other top Premier League clubs to express solidarity with UEFA, and UEFA club competitions in another blow to the European Super League.
Chelsea club statement on European Super League reads;
"The judgement issued today by the European Court of Justice does not change Chelsea FC’s position," the statement read. "We firmly believe that, by working with the Premier League, The FA, other European clubs through our strong relationship with the ECA, and with UEFA and FIFA, we can, together, continue to develop the European game for the benefit of everyone."
Tottenham Hotspur club statement reads;
"We firmly believe that, by working with the Premier League, The FA, other European clubs through our strong relationship with the ECA, and with UEFA and FIFA, we can, together, continue to develop the European game for the benefit of everyone." Tottenham Hotspur also stated that "our position has not changed".
With the decision of the two clubs, five of the big six Premier League clubs have now rejected the European Super League.
As of the time of filing this report, Liverpool is the only club of the big six that is yet to issue a statement on their stance on European Super League, as per the Mail.
Nsmnews understands the Merseyside club were among the pioneer clubs who canvassed for the ambitious football project in 2021.
Manchester United were also in the mix of proponents for the tournament before being forced to withdraw due to heavy protest by English football fans.
Liverpool later apologize to the fans for the uncouth move and withdrew their support for the project. As confirmed by the Mail, they are yet to issue a statement on their stand after the European Court of Justice's ruling.
Meanwhile, with Chelsea and Tottenham making the cut, the big five clubs have now cleared the air on European Super League.
The decision by the English clubs is not coming as a surprise. A different narrative to the European Super League project claims that it is being targeted on the Premier League.
While the European Super League will not replace domestic European leagues, it is believed it will minimize their relevance compared to the Super League with more revenue and expected soaring global viewership.
The Premier League is one of the most popular and richest football leagues in Europe. It is believed such status will be lost with the advent of the European Super League.
English clubs will tend to lose more if they sign up to the European Super League hence English clubs are expected to join their European counterparts who want to stick with the status quo.
