Chipotle's stock (CMG) plummeted by more than 10% following the announcement that its CEO, Brian Niccol, will be leaving the company to become the CEO of Starbucks (SBUX) next month.
Niccol, who has been with Chipotle since 2018, played a pivotal role in the company's recovery from a significant E. coli crisis and oversaw a period of substantial growth, with annual revenue more than doubling to $9.9 billion by 2023. Scott Boatwright, Chipotle's COO, will act as interim CEO.
Despite the executive shake-up, industry analysts believe that Chipotle is well-positioned for the transition, citing the company's strong brand and capable leadership team. Chipotle CFO Jack Hartung, who had planned to retire in 2025, will remain with the company indefinitely in a strategic role.
