CMD of Yaba Psychiatric hospital reveals 100% increase in admission of patients

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of a Psychiatric hospital in Yaba has revealed the alarming rate of patients being checked into the medical facility in recent times. He revealed that the rate of admissions have gone up about 100%. Dr Olugbenga Owoeye is the Chief Medical Director of the Federal Neuro-psychiatric Hospital in Yaba, Lagos. He recently disclosed how the number of people being admitted into the ward has increased this year, 2023.

He shared that the psychiatric patient admissions had a 100% increase in 2023. He disclosed this recently while speaking during the Annual ScoreCard presentation. The presentation was named “A Day With the Medical Director,”. The event took place on Wednesday, December 20, 2023. Dr Owoeye was sharing the evolution of the hospital’s landscape. He revealed that it was a "seven per cent rise in new cases and a three per cent uptick in follow-up patients, both male and female". According to him, this illustrates that there is an increase in demand for mental health care services.

He shared that the current prevailing economic challenges as well as other socio-economic issues which Nierians are facing in the country has affected this as well. This is one ofthe major reasons for the hike in this percentage.
In his words “The year 2023 saw a significant rise in psychiatric patient admissions, with a 100% increase compared to the previous year. Notably, there was a seven per cent surge in new cases and a three per cent increase in overall patient attendance,”

He went ahead to speak about the achievements and projects they were able to complete this year including the Yaba administrative building, draingaes, rehabilitation of internal roads etc. He then spoke about the other challenges being faced which include funding and insufficient manpower. He spile about the high rate at which he workers are leaving the country nowadays. He then shared their vision for 2024 which includes training, staffing and more developmental projects.
