Court sends former CBN Governor, Emefiele to Kuje Prison

The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele has been sent to Kuje Prison. It was the High Court sitting in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that gave the orders that Emefiel be sent to Kuje Prison. Emefiele will be remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the time his bail request is determined.

His full name is Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele. He is a well-known Nigerian economist, politician, and a banker. He served as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria for 9 years until recently when he was suspended by the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He began serving as the CBN governor on the 4th of June 2014 till the 9th of June 2023.

Emefiele is 62 years old. He is married to Margaret Emefiele. He was born on the 4th of August 1961 in Lagos state. He is currently facing trial in court on the grounds of alleged fraud. The trial held on Friday, November 16, 2023 and his charges whish were 20 in number have been reduced to 6 now. The fraud he was charged with had been a sum of N6.5 billion but it has now been reduced to N1bn.

During the trial, Mathew Burkaa SAN, who is the counsel for Emefiele moved the application for bail for Emefiele but it had been opposed by the counsel of the Federal Governmentof Nigeria, Rotimi Oyedepo. Justice Hamza Muazu who is the presiding judge, states that they cannot deliver the ruling there and then asked for more time.

He then ordered that they remand Godwin Emefiele at the Kuje prison until they can determine his bail application. The case has also been adjourned till November 22 2023 and then the ruling on the bail application will be delivered then the commencement of trial will resume on the 28th of November 2023.
