Dani Alves could be back on the streets in the coming weeks - despite being slammed with a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence for sexual assault.
Alves was found guilty on Thursday, February 22, 2024, of raping a woman in the bathroom of a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022.
He was handed a four-and-a-half years prison sentence and ordered to pay the victim €150,000 for the damage caused.
Anyway, reports from the Spanish media indicate that Dani Alves could be released from prison as early as July 20, 2024, when he would have served one-third of his sentence.
The Brazilian superstar would be allowed to leave jail to work or “participate in activities” for the day before returning to confinement at night based on Spanish law.
However, it is uncertain what these activities will be, but such a move will have to be approved by the prison surveillance court and it is highly dependent on the footballer's behavior during his stay behind bars.
Alves has been held in pre-trial detention since he was arrested in January 2023 and those 13 months count in his sentence.
This certainly implies that by April 2025, the footballer could be allowed to exit prison overnight and spend weekends at home.
This will be due to him having spent more than half of his sentence by then, which will be some respite in a gloomy state for the former Barcelona man.
Meanwhile, Dani Alves might not have to go through his prison sentence if he wins his appeal against the verdict by the judge.
Ines Guardiola, the footballer's lawyer made it known on February 22, 2024, that she will appeal the sentence because she believes her client isn't guilty of the offense.
Speaking outside the court premises, Guardiola said her legal team will appeal the sentence.
The lawyer during an interview with reporters said: “Four-and-a-half years is much better than nine and 12 that the accusation requested, but we are going to appeal because I still believe in Mr Alves' innocence.
“We are going to review the sentence, but I can tell you that we are going to appeal.”
Ines Guardiola also added that her legal team will defend the footballer's innocence until the last minute.
She said: “We continue to believe in the innocence of Mr Alves. He already knows the sentence. We will defend his innocence to the end.”
Dani Alves was sent back to Brian 2 prison near the Catalan capital after his sentencing and he will remain incarcerated, pending his appeal.
The 40-year-old had a magnificent football career, playing for several gigantic teams, including; Barcelona, Juventus, Paris Saint Germain, and Sevilla.
He made 869 career appearances, scoring 61 goals and providing 178 assists across all competitions.
