Dani Carvajal has expressed willingness to take a wage cut to decrease the number of games he is expected to play.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, November 28, before Real Madrid's Champions League match against Napoli, Carvajal acknowledged the growing pressure on elite players due to injuries and a congested schedule in the Spanish top flight.
With both Barcelona and Real Madrid experiencing a shortage of senior players on the bench, Carvajal highlighted the limited rest opportunities available for top players.
The 31-year-old Spaniard mentioned this while he was addressing the ongoing debate about the overloaded football calendar.
He said: “Many of us, the players, don’t agree with the fact that there are so many matches and so many that don’t mean much."
"If you push the players too much, the level of quality goes down. And, it’s no coincidence that there are so many injuries."
"The calendar is demanding for those of us who play in top clubs and for their countries. The new Club World Cup format will leave us with practically no summer holiday."
Many football enthusiasts have countered the argument by suggesting that if the players want to reduce the number of games they play, they should also be willing to accept a reduction in earnings.
On this argument, Carvajal acknowledged that every player has their perspective, and indicated that he would be willing to consider such a compromise.
He added: "It’s complicated, but the players have the power to do something. One argument against is that the players would have to lower the salary, but we never said we wouldn’t lower it.”
Dani Carvajal addressed Real Madrid's injury list
The club's vice-captain addressed the extensive injury list, noting the absence of key players Eder Militao and Thibaut Courtois for much of the season.
As a result of these injuries, top teams are rarely able to play at full strength, according to Dani Carvajal.
In addition, Carvajal expressed concern over the club’s extensive injury list, stating that having so many players unavailable is not ideal.
However, he also noted that this situation presents a chance for less-utilized players to step up and showcase their skills, emphasizing the need for them to always be ready for such opportunities.
He said: “It’s not good for us to have so many players missing. That said, these absences open up opportunities for players who don’t usually get so many minutes. They always know they have to be prepared for moments like this.”

Carvajal expressed that he is completely focused and ready for the upcoming Champions League game against Napoli which will take place at Santiago Bernabeu later today, Wednesday, November 29 at 21:00.
